The Louisiana State Capitol Building has a rich history beyond the architecture. Huey P. Long was a powerful politician that convinced the public and the government that it was in the state’s best interest to build a new Capitol Building. Since it was during the Great Depression in the early 1930’s, he had to fight for the Capitol Building’s construction. Huey P. Long was tragically assassinated on the grounds of the Capitol Building in 1935 and is now buried on the grounds along with a statue facing the Capitol Building. The Louisiana State Capitol Building is the largest Capitol Building in the United States. A structure that large is not built modestly and no expense was spared in this construction.
